Character Creation

Characters for the Babylon 5 Technomage LARP will be created using a modified version of White Wolf’s MAGE: The Ascension rules. Some of the character creation and rules have been dropped or simplified to promote the one episode nature of the game, rather than to portray an evolving character.

This page is the basic character creation form. This is done solely for the purpose of creating characters for a single Live Action Role Playing (LARP) event. I would like players to create several very different characters. I need traditional mages, who stand by the old guard and accept the sequestering of technomages. I need young agitators who feel hiding is a BAD idea. I need characters that are very upset that the old guard has lied. I need possible agents of the Shadows. I need characters who decry the death of the TECH and are trying to save it all costs. I need characters that fear the TECH as well as use it, and respect the ancient prohibitions against studying the TECH. Just about anything you can think of, I need. The ultimate objective is to have characters become the antagonists for each other, and to have minimal GM intervention necessary.

Note: At present, you must keep track of how many Free Traits you have to use. Some options will use up Free Traits and others provide additional Free Traits for use elsewhere.

STEP 1- Concept

Enter Your Real Name:
Enter Character Name:

Character Race:
specify if Race = Other
Character Sex:
Briefly Describe Your Concept:

This is where you define the essential nature and basic idea for your character? Is it an idealistic young apprentice, following in the steps of his mentors as best as possible? Is it a disagreeable old mage who has spent his lifetime secretly studying the TECH? Whatever the character idea is, hold onto it while you work through the rest of the process. (Note: Your real name is just used to track which characters belong to whom)

RACE - Race has no effect on a character YOU ARE WHATEVER RACE YOU COME DRESSED AS! A skull cap and a bone ridge would work to be a Mimbari, Paint a face red with black blotches and be a Narn. Spike the hair and be Centauri. Mages look beyond race. Although You MIGHT suffer a social penalty if you cone up with a good Pak-Mara mask! (Laugh)

NOTE! In addition to the basic character Options, a Character starts with 5 Free Traits to spend for optional extra selections. Note that certain choices, such as taking Negative Attributes, can add provide additional Free Trait "points".

STEP 2 - Mage Pathway
Mage Pathway
Mages are often solitary beings. But there are also common teachings and pathways that some of them share. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BELONG TO A PATHWAY, but a path will help define your characters Pathways will often give useful advantages and some disadvantages. There are 4 Paths, learn more about the Mage Pathways here.
STEP 3 – Attributes
Rate Your Attributes:
Note: 1 = Primary, 2 = Secondary, 3 = Tertiary

Optional Negative Attributes:

Specify Negative Trait #1 (or leave blank)
Specify Negative Trait #2 (or leave blank)
Specify Negative Trait #3 (or leave blank)

Optional Free Trait Improvements:

Physical:

Social:

Characters are described in terms of attributes. There are 3 types of Attributes: Physical, Mental, and Social. You must rate these as to which is your Primary (base skill level = 7), Secondary (base skill level = 5) and Tertiary (base skill level = 3) Attribute. You will be better in actions using your primary attribute, and worse in actions using your tertiary attribute.

NEGATIVE TRAITS – A character may gain a few additional free traits by applying negative traits. If someone realizes you have a negative trait then they will have an advantage in appropriate challenges. YOU MUST ROLEPLAY THE TRAITS IN GAME! - If you are clumsy, bump into people or furniture at least once every 30 min! give people a chance to learn your negatives. Selecting Negative Attributes provides additional Free Traits. You are limited to no more than 3 negative traits total.

Negative Physical Traits: Clumsy, Cowardly, Decrepit, Frail, Lame, Puny, Sickly, Slow.
Negative Social Traits: Callous, Condescending, Dull, Meek, Naïve, Obnoxious, Shy, Tactless, Untrustworthy.
Negative Mental Traits: Forgetful, Gullible, Ignorant, Oblivious, Predictable, Shortsighted, Unstable, Witless.

You may also spend Free Traits to improve on the attribute's base skill level (each Free Trait used will increase the skill level by 1).

Select 6 abilities - You can select the same ability more than once, and you will be better in it. Most abilities are self-explanatory, but you can find more detailed description of Abilities here.

You may expend Free Traits to get Extra abilities (1 Free Trait = 1 Extra Ability).

SPECIALTIES: Some Ability selections are broad, and require you to choose a specialization within that ability. The Abilities section has some examples of Specialization, but I prefer people create their own specializations although you can use any of the examples if desired. List each Specialization separately in the space provided.

Backgrounds differ from abilties in that they are usually outside sources that you can call upon for assistance. They usually take time and effort in order to have any effect on the game. You will find more details on Backgrounds here.

Select 3 Backgrounds. You may select the same background more than once and have a better background for it.

You may spend Free Traits to obtain additional Backgrounds (1 Free Trait will add 1 Background).

STEP 6 - Power
Select Your Power Level:

How strong a mage are you? The more powerful a mage you are, the more likely your spells are to succeed, and the more powerful those spells might be. The Default is an Initiate Mage (Level 2). Being an Apprentice Mage will gain you additional Free Traits or you may spend Free Traits to obtain additional Power:

Level 1) Apprentice (Gain 2 additional Free Traits)

Level 2) Initiate (Default level)

Level 3) Mage (Cost 2 Free Traits)

Level 4) Mage Adept (Cost 5 Free Traits)

Level 5) Arch Mage (Cost 9 Free Traits)

There are Nine distinct types of magic, or "Spheres" of magic. Select 6 spheres of magic.

You may spend Free Traits to obtain additional Spheres (1 Free Trait will add 1 Sphere).

You can select the same sphere more than once, and your spells in that type of magic will be more powerful. HOWEVER, you cannot select a magic sphere more times than your POWER level. So a normal initiate mage can only select one sphere of magic TWICE.

More details on the Mage Spheres are found here.

Step 8 - Focus
Optional Focus:
Briefly describe your chosen focus. If none is selected, leave this

A focus is an item or an action that allows a mage to use his magic more easily. Mages who use a focus cast magic easier than those who don't, but if the focus is taken away from them it makes casting more difficult. You need not select a focus, but most mages have them.

Followers of the ARTIFICER Pathway make a new focus for each spell, so they cannot select one here.

Step 9 - Willpower
Willpower:

Willpower can help characters ignore wounds, and is generally helpful at other times during gameplay .

Weak Will (gain 2 additional Tree Traits)

Normal Will (default)

Strong Will (costs 3 Free Traits)

Step 10 - Character Submission
